    (c)    State four roles of an orthopedic hospital.                                             [ 4 marks ] 

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair.  In   part (a)(i) few candidates correctly named  natural sources of sodium and in (ii) few candidates also stated functions of sodium.  In part (b) candidates could not correctly state deficiencies of  sodium in humans.  In part (c) candidates missed up the roles of general hospital with that of orthopedic hospital.

However, the expected answers are as follows:

  • sea Food/named e.g. crab
  • fruits/named

    (ii)    FUNCTIONS OF SODIUM

  • maintains the correct osmotic pressure of the body fluid/body water balance.
  • useful in transmission of impulses
  • for normal cell membrane permeability/cell functions
  • useful in tissue and blood formation
  •       
     

       (b)  DEFICIENCIES OF SODIUM IN HUMANS

  • dehydration
  • oedema
  • muscle cramp/pull

      (c )      ROLES OF AN ORTHOPAEDIC HOSPITAL

  • gives appointment/care to patient
  • recommends test such as x-ray
  • treatments of injuries, diseases of bones and muscles
  • prescribes drugs to patients
  • admits patients in the hospital
  • counselling of patients
  • performs surgical operation to any part of the body that required operation
  • recommend/provide artificial limbs/crutches
