 b. Explain the following disorders of digestive system:
i.          constipation;                                                                           [2 marks]
ii.         peptic ulcer;                                                                           [2 marks]

iii.        dyspepsia.                                                                                [2 marks]

Observation

 

Many candidates attempted this question and their performance was fair. In part (a) some candidates correctly stated effect of smoking on humans.  In part (b) majority of the candidates could not explain the stated disorders of digestive system.
The expected answers are as follow:

5.   (a)        Effects of smoking on humans

-           damage to vital organs/systems of the body/named
-           respiratory disease e.g. cancer of the lungs
-           unpleasant odour
-           indigestion
-           miscarriage
-           economic wastage
-           stained teeth/unattractive appearance
-           emaciation
-           loss of appetite
-           death              

(b)      Explanation of disorders of the digestive system
(i)        Constipation

-           This is an intestinal / digestive disorder
-           This is as a result of failure to pass faeces at regular interval / infrequent bowel movement

(ii)       Peptic ulcer

-           This is a painful sore in the lining of the stomach/duodenum
-           This is as a result of the action of digestive juice/ hydrochloric acid in the lining of the stomach / duodenum

(iii)      Dyspepsia

-           A sensation of discomfort/pain in the upper gastrointestinal tract / stomach
-           This is caused by over eating / indigestion / hurried / irregular meal.
