This was another very popular question.  However, many who attempted it produced skimpy answers and some listed what ECOWAS has done without relating them to the benefits which Nigeria has gained from her membership of the organization.  Some of the following points were expected to be outlined by the candidates:
                    (a)        (i)         To promote economic development of the region through
                      integration.
(ii)        To encourage trade between member states.
(iii)       To improve communication links between the member countries.
(iv)       Free movement of citizens to other countries in the region.
                                                        (v)        Promotion of social activities and exchange of idea.

                      (b)        (i)         ECOWAS has enabled Nigeria to interact with other states in the
                      region.
(ii)        Meetings of ECOWAS have provided opportunities for the discussion of economic problems and finding solution to them.
(iii)       Citizens of Nigeria have been able to travel to other ECOWAS countries and stayed up to 90 days without visas.
(iv)       Traders from Nigeria were able to access goods and markets in other West African countries.
                    (v)        Employment opportunities have been provided in the organization and its agencies for qualified Nigerians, etc.    |
