Question 7:

Identify any five shortcomings of the amalgamation of Nigeria.

OBSERVATIONS

This was not a popular question to the candidates and the few ones who attempted it scored low marks. It expected the candidates to explore the deficiencies of the amalgamation of Nigeria. However, some candidates concentrated on the reasons for the amalgamation while a few others focused on Indirect Rule System. Some candidates were able to brilliantly explore the shortcomings of the amalgamation and identified the following points:

  1. It failed to unite the people because it preserved the differences among the people as well as in their policies of administrations between the northern and southern people;
  2. the boundary adjustments which followed the amalgamation left some geographical imbalance between the north and the south which affected nation building efforts;
  3. there was no central legislature to bring Nigerians together to discuss the affairs of their country;
  4. it retarded the progress of self-rule but continued the existence of colonial rule as seen in the emirate system in Nigeria, etc.
