Question 8:

Outline any five reasons for the partial success of Indirect rule in Yorubaland.

OBSERVATIONS

This question was very popular but very few candidates scored good marks in it. It demanded them to explain the reason for the relative failure of Indirect rule in Yorubaland. Most candidates emphasized on either the reason for introducing the system or its success in Nigeria. However , few candidates were able to understand the requirement of the question and attempted it judiciously. Generally, candidates were expected to outline the following points so as to score good marks:

  1. The uncooperative attitude of some Yoruba kings toward Alaafin over the supreme authority accorded to him;
  2. the rivalry between Ibadan and Oyo over the control of Yorubaland;
  3. the revocation of semi-independence status of Abeokuta by Lord Lugard led to protest and resentment toward the British;
  4. the use of forced labour by the British;
  5. the introduction of taxes was resented by the people, so its collection was slow;
