Candidates’ were expected to
(a) Define Gathers in garment construction.
(b) State how gathers can be used on clothes.
(c) Describe the six steps involved in making gathers in garment construction.

Observation

 

This question required the candidates to define Gathers in garment construction and state how gathers can be used on clothes. Majority of the candidates that attempt this question performed well, they were able to define Gathers in garment construction as : gathers are small folds of material pulled together, they are suitable for fine fabrics and how gathers can be used on clothes such as,

USES OF GATHERS ON CLOTHES.
- They are used to control fullness;
- They are used on skirts, sleeves, frills and yoke.

In 6(c) was widely attempted by many candidates and the performed excellently and they were able to describe the steps involved in making gathers in garment construction. such as:

STEPS INVOLVED IN MAKING GATHERS IN GARMENT CONSTRUCTION.
- Measure out thrice the width of the finished measurement on the weft;
- measure out 5cm from the edge on the fabric;
- make a mark/pin the fabric;
- make two rows of running stitches along the edge to be gathered;
- wound the thread with an office pin at the end;
- pull together the two threads from the other end to desired length.
