Question 1


Observation

(a) Candidates were asked to write a letter of invitation to their friends inviting them to their school’s inter-house sports. Many candidates treated this topic very well. The required points like date of event, time and place of the event, the dignitaries invited etc. were listed.
(b) Candidates were required to write a conversation between two girls on their preparation towards the university entrance examination (JAMB). This was well handled by many and was written in a dialogue form as required.
(c) Candidates were asked to write as the senior prefect, a speech to be delivered during the orientation of new students. The is expected to point out some of the school rules and regulations, time to rise and go to bed, series of activities done in the school, etc. Few candidates attempted this question.
(d) Candidates were requested to write a letter to the editor of a newspaper, suggesting ways of curbing the menace of incessant killings in our land now. Many candidates did not attempt this topic. Those who did failed to put the two addresses required in an official letter.
Points required here include: training and equipping the police well, encouraging the media to continue in condemning this nefarious act publicly without ceasing, putting up serious sanctions for those caught, etc.
(d) Candidates were asked to write on a dialogue between a teacher and a farmer. Many who attempted this question were able to state the present conditions of their professions, the benefits, the problems they are encountering but could not mention the future plans for improvement.
(e) Candidates were asked to write a story that illustrates with the proverb: anyone who uses soft words or who humbles himself/herself hardly fails to have his/her demand met. Many candidates attempted this question but failed to explain the proverb before illustrating with a story as required.
