Many candidates attempted this question. A good number of candidates were able to define flashback but failed to give instances of it in the novel. Only a few of them were unable to answer the question satisfactorily.

The required answers should include:

• Flashback is a literary device used to recall past events as the plot develops in the novel.
• Instances of flashback in the story, for example, Ajumobi’s death and his life with Yaremi is told through flashback.
• The overall effect of flashback on the narrator

Candidates’ performance in this question was fair.
