Literature-In-English Paper 3 WASSCE (PC), 2017

Question 7

OLIVER GOLDSMITH: She Stoops to Conquer

How does Constance Neville stoop to conquer Hastings in the play?

Observation

A good number of candidates attempted this question. However, they confused Constance with Kate, thereby focusing on how Kate Hardcastle stoops to conquer in the text instead of Constance Neville.

The following points were expected from the candidates:

  • Constance’s relationship with Mrs Hardcastle.
  • Constance’s jewels on Mrs Hardcastle’s custody and the latter’s imposition of marriage on Constance.
  • Constance and Tony’s deceitful relationship.
  • The revelation of Tony’s true age.
Candidates’ performance in the question was poor.
