QUESTION 2 -violin

  1. Identify two instruments that look like the one in the diagram below.
  2. Name the parts labelled I – IV on the diagram below.

    • State two differences between the violin and the guitar.

     

OBSERVATIONS

 

Candidates’ responses to this question were remarkable, though some candidates were not able to differentiate between violin and guitar and this caused them to have low performance in the question. The following points should have been highlighted in their responses for them to score high marks:

  1. Viola, Cello, Double bass, Violin.                                                            
  2. (i) Bow                                                                                                     

(ii) Tuning pegs                                                                                        
(iii) Finger board, Strings                                                                         
(iv) Bridge                                                                                                

  1. (i) Violin has four strings but guitar has six.

(ii) Violin is bowed but guitar is only plucked.
(iii) Violin is held at the shoulder but guitar is held at the side of the body
             (under arm, on the limb, etc.).
(iv) Violin has wooden pegs but guitar has metal pegs.
(v) Violin has no fret while guitar has.
(vi) Violin has 'f' hole while the guitar has round hole as resonator.
(vii) Violin has tuning adjusters while the guitar has not.
