      (a)        State any four differences between traditional and Art music.
      (b)        (i)          List any four main classifications of African instruments.
                  (ii)        Categorize the following musical instruments under the main classifications mentioned in 4(b)(i) above.
                  Goje, Ngedegu, Alghaita, Shekere, Gangan.

 

OBSERVATION

This question was popular among the candidates and most of these candidates       performed fairly well. However, a few candidates performed poorly in the question           due to their inadequate knowledge of the musical instruments of Nigeria. They were     expected to respond to the question in the following manner
(a)        (i)         The composers of traditional music are not known but composers of art                  music   are known.
(ii)        Art music combines elements of traditional music and western                                 conventional    harmonies but traditional music has its own tonality;
(iii)       Art music is composed by formally trained musicians whereas
traditional music is part of oral tradition of a particular community.
(iv)       Traditional music is transmitted orally from one generation to the other                   but art music is documented.
