(a)    (i)    List six materials needed by officials during an athletics meet.           [6 marks]

        (ii)   Describe the ‘On your marks’ position of an athlete in a sprint race.   [5 marks]                                                   

(b)    (i)    State three differences between 100m race and 800 m race.               [6 marks]

        (ii)   Mention the two events in athletics that require a cross bar.               [2 marks]

(c)    How is an invalid jump indicated in a long jump event?                                [1 mark]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates, and their performance was fair
particularly in part (b).

In part (a)(ii) candidates could not describe the ‘on your mark’ position of an athlete
in a sprint race.  In part (c) candidates could not state how an invalid jump is indicated
in a long jump event.

The expected answers were as follows:
(a)(ii)   Description of “on your marks’ position of an athlete in a sprint race
            The athlete:

  1. assumes the squat/crouch position;
  2. places one foot behind the starting/scratch line;
  3. places the knee of the other leg on the ground;
  4. places the hands behind the starting line;
  5. has his fingers pointing sideways;
  6. has his arms shoulder-width apart;
  7. has his eyes looking a few metres in front of the starting line/looks
  8. straight;
  9. has his neck relaxed.

 
  (b)      Indicating of an invalid long jump

  • By raising up a red flag
