Observation

TThis question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair.  In part (a)(i) few candidates correctly define what are sprint races,  in (a) (ii) many candidates  could not correctly state qualities of a good hurdler.  In part (b) many candidates could not correctly explain incoming runner and anchorman, candidates took anchorman as the first leg while incoming runner was said to be the second leg in a relay race.    In part (c) candidates correctly give reasons why officiating is important during an athletics meet.  In part (d) candidates also correctlygive faults in shot put event
The expected answers were as follows:
2(a)      (i)         SPRINT RACES

  • sprint are short distance races/explained
  • run in full speed throughout
  • races are started in crouch position with a starting block

            (ii)        QUALITIES OF A GOOD HURDLER

  • should be flexible/supple
  • should have quick reaction time
  • balance
  • courage/determination
  • perseverance/endurance
  • quick/fast movement of the legs
  • good speed
  • agility
  • rhythm
  • ability to run and land properly/springing
  • neuro – muscular coordination/explained
  • it entails good pace judgement in approaching the hurdle strides/explained

  (b)      EXPLANATION OF THE FOLLOWING TERMS IN ATHLETICS
            (i)         INCOMING RUNNER
This is an athlete who is running to handover baton to the outgoing runner in a relay race.                                                             
(ii)        ANCHORMAN
            An athlete that run the last leg of a relay race in athletics

  (c)      REASONS FOR OFFICIATING DURING ATHLETICS MEET
            -           for athletes to obey rules and regulations

  • to have record for future reference
  • to guarantee flow of activities
  • to effect division of labour in athletics meet
  • to reduce/minimize the incidence of injury during the meet
  • to give confidence to both athletes and spectators
  • to maintain orderliness
  • to certify that equipment to be used is of good standard

  (d)     FAULTS IN SHOT PUT EVENT
            -           stepping on the stop board
            -           stepping on the ground outside the circle

    • delivering shot from above the ear
    • leaving the circle before missile has landed on the ground
    • short landing outside the sector
    • athlete leaving the circle from the front half
    • commencing throw from outside the circle
    • putting shot with two hands
