Observation

TThis question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair.  In part (a) many candidates correctly state ways in which volleyball game is similar to tennis game. In part (b) many candidates could not correctly state duties of the referees in a volleyball game.  In part (c) many candidates could not correctly state duties of the scorer in basketball game. In part (d) candidates correctly state types of shot in  handball game.
The expected answers were as follows:
5.(a)     SIMILARITIES BETWEEN VOLLEYBALL GAME AND TENNIS GAME

  • both are started with service
  • in both game, ball is played over a net
  • net is fixed at the centre
  • a toss is conducted for choice of service or side
  • for every fault committed, an  opponent gains point
  • service is from a designated area
  • both are played on the court
  • both have official who announce the points after each rally

  (b)      DUTIES OF A VOLLEYBALL REFEREE

            -           starts, and ends the game

  • calls for change of service/indicates change of service
  • disqualifies a player after two warnings for unsportsmanlike behaviour
  • warns a player/official for unsportsmanlike conduct/explained
  • take final decisions on maters affecting the game
  • indicates when a point is scored/fault is committed 
  • inspects/approves all facilities and equipment before the game starts
  • ensures that all rules at the game are obeyed
  • signals when a fault is committed  

 (c)       DUTIES OF A SCORER IN BASKETBALL GAME

            -           records players’ name

  • informs the referee of any breach of the rule about numbering
  • records all personal/technical fouls
  • informs the referee when a player has committed the total/maximum number

of fouls

  • records the number of time-out for each team
  • warns a team through an official when they have exhausted the number

of time-out.

 (d)      TYPES OF SHOT IN HANDBALL GAME

    • pivot/reverse shot
