(a)   List five sporting activities in the Spartan physical education programme.     [5 marks]
(b)  State five conditions required of an athlete during the ancient Olympic Games  [5 marks]

Observation

 

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair. 
In part (a) candidates correctly listed sporting activities in the Spartan physical education   programme, few wrote wrong answers such as kick-boxing, calisthenics individual combat and self-defence.

In part (b) candidates could not correctly answer the question, they wrote wrong answers such as using your sword properly, lifting the shielding honouring  zeus and obedience to the sacred truce as conditions required of an athlete during the ancient Olympic Games.

  • wrestling

  • hunting

  • throwing objects (archery)

  • fencing (fighting with sword)                                                                               

  (b)    CONDITIONS REQUIRED OF AN ATHLETE DURING THE ANCIENT OLYMPIC GAMES

  • the athlete must have been in training for  at least ten months
  • the athlete must be a free man i.e a free born not a slave
  • he has to be of perfect physique
  • he must not have any criminal record/be of good character
  • he has to take an oath that he would not use illegal tactics to win, to which father, brothers and trainers also had to swear.
  • he has to compete in accordance with the rules
a competitor cannot withdraw from competition once enrolled even if physically unfit.
