(a)  Name two examples of each of the following classes of drugs:  
(i) stimulants;

(ii) narcotics.  [4 marks]

(b) State four effects of the abuse of sedatives on the body.   [4 marks]

(c)  Name two body systems that are mainly responsible for human movement.       [2 marks]

Observation

 

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good.

In part (a) only few candidates got the answers, some gave wrong answers such as benzid veins alcohol and mixed it up with narcotics and in (a) (ii) candidates also wrote wrong answers such as kolanuts, snuff, they also mixed it up with examples of  stimulants.

In part (b) many candidates correctly stated effects of the abuse of sedatives in the body although, few wrote wrong answers such as it leads to accident and it reduces brain functions.

In part (c) many candidates  also correctly named body systems mainly responsible for human movement.  While few of them went wrong and wrote triceps, respiratory system, blood system and excretory system.

However, the expected answers are as follows:

  • breathing is hampered/breathing is disturbed
  • disturbed sleep/insomnia/restlessness
  • profuse sweating
  • irritability and fever
  • unconsciousness/slurred speech
  • death may result
  • unproductive/dullness/drowsiness/fatigue
  • impaired coordination/poor judgement/poor reflex/staggering
