Employees of the Ministry of Health formed a consumer co-operative society.

  1. State four functions the co-operative society would perform to members.
  2. State four advantages of this form of business.

Observation

 

Some candidates could not differentiate between functions of the co-operative society and advantages of the cooperative society as a form of business. They stated provision of financial assistance to member as both a function and advantage of the cooperative society. They obviously were not able to apply their knowledge of cooperative society in attempting
the question.

The responses expected from candidates are:

(a) Functions Ministry of Health Consumer Co-operative Society would perform to   members.   
            i. The Consumer Co-operative society would provide financial assistance to members.
            ii. It would encourage saving habits among members.
            iii. It would provide avenue for skill acquisition for members.
            iv. It would make products available to members at subsidized prices.
            v. It would improve the standard of living of members.
            vi. It would provide avenue for additional income to members.
            vii. It would afford members the opportunity to buy goods in small quantities.
            vii. It would obtain loan for the benefit of members.


(b) Advantages of Consumer Co-operative as a form of business
            i. Consumer co-operative society is easy to form as no long and complicated legal processes are involved.
            ii. It enjoys perpetual existence as the death or retirement of any member would not affect its operations.
            iii. Membership of the co-operative is open to all staff of the ministry irrespective of their status.
            iv. The liability of members is limited to the extent of their contributions
            v. It is democratic in nature as management is elected on the basis of one-member one-vote.
            vi. It promotes cordial relationship among members.
            vii. Members are involved in the management of the business thereby reducing cost of operations.
