Question 3

(a)       Construct a diagonal scale of 5 cm to 1 m to read a maximum of 5 m and   a minimum of 1 cm.
 (b)       Label the scale constructed in 3(a) and indicate a length of 2 m 65 cm.
 (c)        (i)         Use the scale to construct a hexagon of 2.65 m across corners.
             (ii)        Measure the side of the hexagon.

This question requires candidates to construct a diagonal scale of 5 cm to 1 m to read a maximum of 5 m and a minimum of 1 cm.  They are to indicate the required length of 2.65 m.  The length is to be used to construct a hexagon with the length being used as distance across corners for the hexagon

Observation

.This question requires candidates to construct a diagonal scale of 5 cm to 1 m to read a maximum of 5 m and a minimum of 1 cm.  They are to indicate the required length of 2.65 m.  The length is to be used to construct a hexagon with the length being used as distance across corners for the hexagon.

Most of the candidates that attempted this question performed fairly well but could not use the required distance to construct the hexagon.

Candidates were required to do the following:

                        Diagonal Scale

  1. draw rectangle A B C D with AB = 25cm;
  2. divide the rectangle into 5 equal parts of 5cm each;
  3. divide side AD into 10 equal parts;
  4. draw horizontal lines through the divisional points on AD parallel to line AB;
  5. divide line AE into 10 equal parts and transferring divisions to line DF;
  6. draw diagonals on each divisional rectangle on AEFD;
  7. indicate 2.6 m on the scale;
  8. draw neatly.

The solution is shown below.

Constructing Hexagon

  1. draw centre lines;
  2. draw circle with 2.65m as diameter;
  3. draw the regular hexagon;
  4. state the length of the side of hexagon = 1.325 ± 0.05;
  5. draw neatly.

The solution is shown below.
