  1. Define the following terms:
    1. warp;
    2. weft;
    3. clothes;
    4. fabric;
    5. textile.
  2. List any five steps involved in producing a batik.

Observation

 

Majority of the candidates attempted this question. The performance was not satisfactory as few of the candidates took warp for weft. Warp is the thread in the lengthwise on the loom while, weft is the horizontal thread on the loom. The candidates were expected to answer in the following way:      

 

(a)  (i) Warp
-           One of the two basic components used in weaving.
-           It is held stationary in tension on a loom.
-           It is the yarn arranged lengthways on the loom.                                                                                      

      (ii)Weft
-           Horizontal threads interlaced through the warp in a woven fabric.
-           Yarn woven across (horizontally) the warp.
-           It is the transverse thread of a textile that are passed through the shed.
-           It is breadthwise on a loom.

(iii)Clothes
-           Garments worn to cover the body.
-           Example include hand towel, shirts, coats and dresses.                                                                        
(iv)Fabric
-           It is the material made of fibres of either cotton or polyester.
-           Cloths or other materials produced by weaving, knitting and felting fibres.

(v)Textile
-           It is any material made of interlacing fibres.
-           A type of cloth, woven fabric/knitting cloth/dyeing.
-           Used for bed covering, wall covering, blinds and as wearing apparel.
-           It comes from a Latin word (Testilis) meaning to weave                                                    

(b)              Steps involved in producing Batik
-     Prepare fabric/wash material to remove any sizing.
-     Spread your cloth on a flat surface.
-     Plan and draw the patterns on the cloths with coloured chalk/soft pencil/chalk pastel.
-     Waxing.
-     Prepare dye/chemical.
-     Deeping and leave it for about 15 minutes.
-     Dewax.
-     Drying.
-     Ironing.
