Question 7

(a) Mention three former French colonies in West Africa.

(b) Identity four qualifications for assimilation of indigenous Africans into French citizenship.

Observation

This question was popular among the candidates. The candidates that attempted it performed fairly above average. They failed to develop their points in the (b) part and scored low marks. Nevertheless, the candidates were expected to explain the following points in order to earn good marks:
           

(a)      Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Togo, Ivory Coast/La Cote d’Ivoire,

        Benin/Dahomey, Burkina Faso/Upper Volta, Mauritania.

(b)

  1. A native/inhabitant of any of the Senegalese coastal towns (quatre communes);
  2. An adult aged 18 years and above;
  3. Ability to speak and write French proficiently;
  4. Profession of the catholic faith/ Christianity;
  5. Shunning the African way of worship;
  6. Denunciation of polygamy;
  7. Evidence of sound moral conduct;
  8. Serve the French colonial government for about 10 years;
  9. Possession of adequate means of livelihood;
  10. Having performed the requisite period of military service.
