This was an unpopular question and very few candidates attempted it. The question demanded the candidates to explain the problems created by the mining industry during the colonial rule. A few candidates who attempted it did not take cognisance of the period (colonial rule) in question and listed the modern challenges of the mining industry. Some relevant points were listed but candidates failed to explain them. However, for candidates to score good marks, the following points were expected of them.
(i) Agriculture was neglected as farmers left their farms to the mining areas for employment;
(ii) it led to the scarcity of, and increase in prices of goods and services;
(iii) it led to high rate of mobility of labour in favour of the mining industry;
(iv) reduction in school enrolment and increase in dropout rate among students;
(v) decline of local industries. |
