This question attracted many candidates but very few of them answered it correctly. Some of those who attempted it failed to provide relevant points that could earn them good marks; they sometimes muddled it up with the activities of Christian missionaries in Nigeria. For the candidates to do adequate justice to this question, the following points were expected to be discussed.
(i) The trade created an opportunity for the Nigerians to sell their farm products to the Europeans;
(ii) it brought about the existence of Nigerian middlemen who acquired wealth in the business;
(iii) it created a Nigerian working class who were employed by European companies. These people later played important role in the socio- economic development of Nigeria;
(iv) the European firms that emerged as a result of the legitimate trade played a major role in boosting the economy of Nigeria;
(v) it revived agriculture which was previously neglected because of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. |
