Question 1
DELE CHARLEY: The Blood of a Stranger
Consider the view that the play exposes the colonialist exploitation of Africa.
Observation
A good number of candidates attempted this question. However, many of them gave mere narrations of the play without pointing out the aspect of colonial exploitation of Mando Land and by extension, Africa.
The required answers should include:
• Whitehead is a representative of colonialism.
• His enlisting through bribery, the support of Maligu who also bribes Soko, the priest.
• Whitehead's disrespect for the custom and tradition of Mando Land by not paying homage to the king and his attempt to rape Wara.
• Whitehead's introduction of alcohol and hard drugs to the people who are exposed to immoral activities as a result.
• Kindo's role in opposing the colonialist exploitation.
Candidates' performance was fair.
