Observation
Many candidates attempted this question. Most of them either gave a weak account of the poem or presented a scanty response. They focused on the symbolism of "Piano" and "Drum" rather than the elements of the two cultures and the effects produced by the music and the resultant confusion.
Candidates were expected to discuss the following points:
• The presentation of the two musical instruments- piano and drums.
• The different elements of the two cultures- Western and African.
• The different effects produced by the music of the two cultures on the persona.
• The confused state of the persona and the possibility of his inclination towards African music and culture.
Candidates'performance in this question was poor.
