Few candidates answered this question. Most of the candidates were unable to bring out instances of dramatic irony in the play. Candidates' responses were not detailed.

The required answers should include:

• Tony's deception of Marlow and Hastings that they are in an inn, when in fact they are in the Hardcastles' home.

• Marlow's belief that Kate is a barmaid when she is the daughter of Mr Hardcastle and his future wife.

• The entrusting of the jewels in the care of Marlow who eventually returns them to Mrs Hardcastle.

• Mrs Hardcastle's belief that she is among a gang of thieves when in fact she has not moved far from her home.

Candidates' performance in the question was poor.
