Question 8
OLIVER GOLDSMITH: She Stoops to Conquer
Assess the character of Mrs Hardcastle in the play.
Observation
Most of the candidates attempted this question. However, many of them gave a character sketch of Mrs Hardcastle. They failed to critically assess her character in relation to the events in the play.
The required answers should include:
• Mrs Hardcastle's love for fashion and desire to live like their neighbour.
• Her incessant quarrels with her husband who is preoccupied with tales of his past military exploits rather than pay attention to her nagging about city life and material wealth.
• Her relationship with Tony whom he spoils.
• Her greed which makes her keep Constance's jewels for Tony whom she (Mrs Hardcastle) wants her (Constance ) to marry.
Candidates' performance in this question was fair.
