This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair however, in part
(a)(i) candidates could not explain correctly clear and drop shot. In part (b)(i) many candidates
could not correctly state difference between service in badminton game and service in tennis
game. However, the few candidates that explained lost marks. In (b )(ii) many candidates
mentioned grips in tennis game. In part (c) (i) many candidates could not correctly give instances
when a receiver could win a point in table tennis game and in (c) (ii) many candidates correctly
mentioned skills common to both tennis game and table tennis game.
The expected answers were as follows:
(a) Explanation of the following terms in badminton
(i) Clear
A stroke played high above the opponent at the net/towards the baseline of the
court
(ii) Drop Shot
It is a stroke in which the shuttlecock drops very close to the net/immediately
after crossing it.
(b)(i) Differences in service in badminton game and service in Tennis game
in badminton the service area is not restricted, but in tennis it is restricted to the
baseline
service is diagonal in tennis, but not so in badminton
service in badminton is taken from inside the court while in tennis service it taken
from outside the court.
in badminton game a served shuttlecock must not touch the floor/ground before it
is played, while in tennis, a served ball must bounce/opponent's court before it is
played/returned
in badminton game, service is delivered from underarm/shuttlecock is hit below
the hips/waist while in tennis game, service is delivered overheadlball is hit from
above the head
in badminton game only one service trial is allowed while in tennis game two
service trials are allowed
in badminton game the shuttlecock is dropped before being hit while in tennis
game the ball is tossed/thrown up before being played.
(ii) Grips in tennis game

(c) (i) Instances when a receiver could win a point in table tennis game
- the server serves the ball into the net
- a server serves the ball out of table
- the server allows a returned ball to bounce twice on his side ofthe table

- the server touches the net/table with his free hand/any part of the body
- the served ball fails to touch the server's side of the table before crossing the net
to the opponent's side
- the serving player reaches over the net to playa ball on the opponent's side/playa &
ball that has not crossed the net
