This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was not impressive.
In part (a) candidates included introduction of modern games, inadequate funds among factors that contributed to the collapse of the ancient Olympic Games. In part (b) few candidates that answered the question missed the points by writing fatique, bumpy body – abnormal fatty body, lunacy as effects of drugs on athletes.
In part (c) few candidates that answered the question wrote wrong answers like it leads to frustration, it leads to agility, it gives strength and it leads to flexibility.
The expected answers were as follows:
(a) Factors that contributed to the collapse of the ancient Olympic Games
- The religious aspect attached to the games was frowned upon
- The games became secularized/Explained
- The moral standards of the competition declined
- Non Greek nationals including slaves also participated
- The saved Truce which had sustained the games was violated
- The Olympic Games Village at Elis was destroyed during the Peloponnesian war
- The popularity of the athletes threatened the emperors.
(b)Effects of drugs on athletes:
Drugs
- cause nervousness in athletes
- cause hallucination in athletes leading to poor sense of judgement
- damage liver in athletes
- affect growth pattern in athletes
- cause cancer in athletes
- cause infertility in athletes
(c) Features of a pre-game diet:
pre-game diet should
- contain more carbohydrate/glucose
- be balanced – vitamins, fats, protein, carbohydrates, minerals, oil and water.
- be palatable
- be familiar diet
- contain sufficient water
- contain moderate salt.
