(a) Describe each of the following types of building:

 

  1. Residential building;
  2. Educational building.

 

(b) State one use of a the following excavating machines

 

  1. Back acter;
  2. Face shovel;
  3. Bulldozer.

 

Observation

 

 Majority of the candidates were able to:

- describe the residential and educational building;

However, a good number of them failed to state the uses of the following excavating machines:

 

  • Back acter;
  • Face shovel;
  • bulldozer.

 

(c ) sketch an isometric view of a spirit level.

The expected response to question 1 is as given below:

 

1.(a) Description of each of the following types of building:

 

  • Residential building: 

This is a building in which sleeping accommodation is provided for normal residential purpose with or without cooking or dining or both facilities.


  • Educational building:
  • This includes any building used for school, college or day-care purposes for  more than eight hours per week involving assembly for instruction, education and recreation.

             

  • This is an accommodation provided for teaching and learning.

                                                                           
(b) Uses of the following excavating machines:

 

  • Backacter: It is used for excavating foundation trenches.

                                                                                                          

  • Face shovel is used to:

-  excavate above its own tract or wheel level:
-  dig soft or reasonably hard materials including soft earth;
-  load excavated soil to a tipper truck.


  • Bulldozer:

-  used for shallow excavation;
-  used to push large quantities of soil/sand, rubbles during construction;
-  used for providing reasonable level ground on site.
