This was a practical based question. The performance of candidates was average.

(a) (i)   List three materials that could be used to lime a fish pond. [3 marks]
(ii)   Mention two ways of liming a fish pond.  [2 marks]
(iii) State five benefits of liming a fish pond. [5 marks]

(b) Define each of the following terms as used in fisheries:
(i) fishing gear;
(ii) fishing craft.  [4 marks]

(c) Outline the steps involved in the construction of a concrete fish pond.   [6 marks]

Observation

 

 

In part (a), majority of the candidates did not know the materials that could be used to lime a fish pond.

In part (b), majority of the candidates correctly defined the term fishing gear, but could   not define fishing craft.

In part (c), majority of the candidates correctly outlined the steps involved in the construction of a concrete fish pond.

The expected answers include

(a) (i) Calcium oxide (CaO) / quick lime
Calcium hydroxide (CaOH) / slaked lime
Agricultural lime / calcium carbonate ( CaCO3)
Shell fish shells ( Oyster shells, clam shells }
Wood ash

     (ii) Through broadcasting / distributing lime by throwing it evenly over pond surface
Sack / bag method / place bagged lime in specific locations in the pond
Distributing lime directly on pond bottom
Placing the lime on the platform at the water inflow point

     (iii)              Ensures nutrient availability / increase pond productivity
Improves pond soil condition / sealing of cracks
Controls pests, pathogens and parasites / predators
Increase water pH / reduces acidity
Reduces turbidity
Serves as buffer / balances pH fluctuations
Increase fish growth / yield
Increase the availability of CO2 for photosynthesis

(b) (i)It is a tool / equipment which is used to harvest / capture / catch fish
