(b) (i) What is fertilization in fish breeding?[2 marks]
(ii) Outline the steps involved in the artificial breeding of fish in the hatchery.  [5 marks]
(iii) State three signs of maturity of a male African catfish brood stock.  [3 marks]
(c) (i) Define the term stocking in fish farming. [2 marks]
(ii) Describe the process of stocking a fish pond.  [4 marks]

This is a popular question among the candidates.
In part (a), majority of the candidates listed four developmental stages of fish in fish culture.
In part (b), majority of the candidates defined the term fertilization in fish breeding. However, majority of them could not outline the steps involved in the artificial breeding of fish in the hatchery.
In part (c), majority of the candidates correctly defined the term stocking in fish farming. However, few of the candidates could not describe the process of stocking a fish pond.
The expected answers include:
(a)    -    Egg
      -    Hatchlings / larvae
      -    Fry
      -    Fingerlings
      -    Juveniles
      -    Adult

(b) (i)  -     It is the fusion of male and female gametes of fish
OR
-    The mixing of male and female gametes of fish before incubation

(ii) -       Broodstock selection
-           Conditioning of brood stock
-           Stripping of brood stock / and extraction of milt
-           Fertilization ( mixing milt with eggs )
-           Incubating fertilized eggs in hatchery tanks / troughs
-           Separation of fry from dead eggs and shells / siphoning
-           Rearing / nursing of hatchlings

(iii)  -       Distended papillae
-           Reddish spot at the tip of the papillae
-           Slimmer body size / structure than the matured female

(c) (i) Stocking is the process of introducing fish into a pond for culture purposes
OR
The act of putting fish into a pond for culture

ii) - Stocking should be done in the cool hours of the day / late in the evening
-   Gently lower the bowl containing the fish into the pond
-   Allow pond water to flow into the bow / tilt bowl
-   Allowing fingerlings to swim freely into the pond water
