(iii) List five fish feed ingredients. [5 marks]

This was a popular question among the candidates. Majority of the candidates answered the question correctly.
In part (a), majority of the candidates defined aquaculture correctly.
In part (b), few candidates could state eight characteristics that made clarias gariepinus a culturable species.
In part (c), candidates could explain spot feeding as used in fisheries, and could equally state three advantages of spot feeding.
The expected answers include:
(a)        It is the rearing / domestication of fish / aquatic organisms in controlled / confined          environment.
(b)          - Ability to reproduce in captivity
            - The seeds are available
            - Acceptability of artificial feed
            - Fast growth rate
            - Disease resistant
            - Hardy / high survival rate
            - Marketability / acceptability to consumers
            - Tolerates adverse environmental conditions
            - Compatibility with other species
            - Ability to withstand high stocking densities
            - Good flesh quality

(c)        (i)         It is a method of feeding fish whereby a predetermined amount of feed is                                  administered to the fish at particular spot{s} in the pond or rearing facility.
