  1. Construct a pie chart to represent the data.
  2. Highlight any two problems in the use of pie charts.
  3. State one other method that could be used to represent the above information.

This question was not answered by many of the candidates. The few who answered the question performed well in the (a) component of the question. However, they did not perform well in the (b) component of the question.

The problems in the use of the pie charts that should have been supplied by the candidates included:

  • Can only show one distribution
  • Comparison of sectors is difficult
  • Mathematical calculation is tasking
  • Construction is difficult if sectors are many
  • Angular measurements are difficult
  • Vision blurred when too many items are involved
  • Difficulty in determining actual figures represented

 

The other methods that could be used to represent the information included:

  • Simple bar chart
  • Percentage bar chart
  • Divided /component bar charts
  • Pictogram
