(a) Define the solar system.

(b) List any five components of the solar system.

(c) Outline any five characteristics of the earth.

This was a popular question that was answered by most of the candidates and they performed very well. However, some of the candidates could not outline five characteristics of the earth.
The expected answers included:
-    spherical or geoid shaped
-    has more oxygen than other planets
-    only planet which supports life
-    has one natural satellite
-    is the 5th largest planet
-    rotates on its axis
-    rotates eastwards (from west to east)
-    revolves round the sun
-    completes a rotation in 24 hours
-    completes a revolution in 365 1/4 days
-    has different seasons
-    the third planet from the sun
-    the surface is made up of 29% land and 71% water
-    is about 148.8 million km away from the sun
-    has outer solid crust
-    possesses an inner molten core
-    surrounded by gaseous envelope
-    the zone of life on the earth is at the interface of hydrosphere, lithosphere and the atmosphere
-    axis is inclined at angle of 66½ o
-    has surface area of 443 million km2
-    has equatorial circumference of 40,085 km
-    has polar circumference of 39,955 km
-    has equatorial diameter of 12,762 km
-    is the most dense planet
-    has polar diameter of 12,722km
