Question 7
- Give an example of the following kind of clouds:
- High clouds;
- Medium clouds;
- Low clouds.
- With the aid of diagrams, describe how latitude affects temperature.
Observation
Few candidates attempted this question and their performance was poor. Examples of the various categories of clouds include:
Examples of high clouds
- cirrus (ci)
- cirrocumulus (cc)
- cirrostratus (cs)
Examples of medium clouds
- altocumulus (Alt-cu)
- altostratus (Alt-st)
Examples of low clouds
- stratocumulus (st-cu)
- stratus (st)
- nimbostratus (Ni-st)
A description of how latitude affects temperature goes thus:
- temperatures at low latitudes are usually higher than temperatures at higher latitudes
- due to the earth’s inclination, the midday sun is always overhead at the tropics
- Sun’s rays at the tropics travel through a shorter distance
- resulting in the minimal loss of heat
- sun’s rays heat up a smaller area at the tropics
- this phenomenon results in generating high temperatures in the tropics
- however in the areas outside the tropics, the sun rays hit the earth at an oblique angle
- in addition, the sun’s rays travel a longer distance through the atmosphere to reach
earth’s surface
- heat is absorbed by clouds, water vapour and dust
- the absorption leads to the loss of heat and reduction of temperature
- additionally the sun’s rays hit a larger area due to the oblique nature
- temperature is thus lower in areas outside the tropics
- temperature decreases with increase in latitude
