(b) Explain the following terms in relation to drug use:
(i) dependence; [3marks]
(ii) abuse; [3marks]
(iii) rehabilitation. [3marks]
Observation
Many candidates attempted this question and their performance was poor. In part (a) majority of the students were give advantage of drug education. In part (b) (i)(ii)(iii) they did poorly in it, it was not satisfactorily handled by the candidates who attempted it.
The expected answers are as follow:
8 (a) ADVANTAGE OF DRUG EDUCATION
- provide useful information on the effects of drug abuse, dependence and misuse
- create awareness on substandard drugs
- create awareness on how to get standard drugs
- disabuse/discourage/self-medication
(b) EXPLANATION OF TERMS
(i) DEPENDENCE
- This is using/taking of drugs
- on a periodic/continuous basis
- without doctor’s prescription
(ii) ABUSE
- This is the indiscriminate/excessive use of drugs
- for non-medical purpose or specific ailment
- that could adversely affect the physical , mental, social and emotional health of an individual.
(iii) REHABILITATION
- This is the process of maintaining/improving/restoring a drug victim/named
- to live a normal live by helping/assisting the individual to stop taking drugs
