Question 10:

Highlight any five reasons the British decided to amalgamate the   Northern and Southern Protectorates of Nigeria in 1914.

This was not a popular question and the very few who attempted it only listed the points and hence scored low marks. Yet, some missed the point outrightly and recorded bad performance. Really, the candidates did not properly comprehend the demand of the question. They were expected to discuss the following:

(i)         The building of Highways to help improve the transportation of
Cash crops.
(ii)        Feeder roads were built to link the major cash crops producing areas which were remote from Highways.
(iii)       Nigeria Produce Marketing Board were established and depots were built in the regions.
(iv)       The main seaports in Nigeria were expanded to enhance the shipment of agricultural products abroad.
(v)        Wharves and harbours were built to facilitate the transportation of cash crops.
(vi)       Numerous cargoes were bought and brought into Nigeria, etc.
