Question 7:

(a) Name any three British consuls in Nigeria up to 1900.
                    (b) Outline any four factors which prevented the early take over of the
                        administration of Nigeria by Europeans.

This was a straightforward but unpopular question. Very few candidates
were able to identify correctly the names of the consuls. However, they
could  not identify four factors that prevented the early takeover of the
administration by the Europeans. They, instead, stated the effects of the
abolition of slave trade. These points were expected from the
                     candidates:

                        (a)        (i)         Consul Philip
                                    (ii)        Consul Johnston
                                    (iii)       Consul Freeman
                                    (iv)       Consul Fraser
                                    (v)        Consul Beecroft, etc.

(b)        (i)         The Climate and the environment took a heavy toll on
them and as a result, British officials went home during the rainy season.  The Nigeria rulers usually launched their attacks during this time.
(ii)        The kings and their subjects raided the businesses of
British traders to discourage them from staying on.
(iii)       Nigerian leaders engaged in guerrilla warfare and
surprised attacks to destabilize and discourage the
 Europeans.
(iv)       The rivalry between the British and the French was a major set-back as neither party wanted the other to have control of the area, etc.
