CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESS

The following weaknesses were shown in the candidates’ work:

(1)     Poor and disjointed answers

    Poor reading habit and inattentiveness to studies generally were causes and, at the             same time, symptoms of the decline in education. This had conditioned the          candidates to provide nil or poor answers to questions. High percentage of          candidates who wrote this paper failed to give reasonable answers worthy of    historical appreciation. Some gave disjointed and illogical answers to the           questions and could not score good marks.

(2)     Irrelevant answers

    Some candidates did not gather sufficient information on Nigeria history as that    was evident in the sordid answers given to the questions. Most of those candidates         provided irrelevant answers which actually contradicted genuine historical             narratives. This pathetic situation was caused by failure to read necessary            textbooks for the examination.

(3)     Short Answers

    Most candidates gave skimpy answers and failed to develop the points listed. This            actually affected their performance as History often requires comprehensive    answers to be able to convince the examiners to award good marks.

(4)     Grammatical errors

The weaknesses of the candidates were also discovered in the poor tenses and grammatical blunders committed while trying to supply answers to the questions. This impeded their communication ability and rendered their writings meaningless. A pathetic situation like this might have undermined good points that could have helped the candidates to score good marks.

SUGGESTED’ REMEDIES

  1. Candidates should improve their communication ability by learning the proper ways to use English language tenses and grammars;
  2. they should be properly taught how to answer History questions comprehensively and  convincingly;
  3. there  is a need for them to adequately read History textbooks and properly prepare for the examinations;
  4. candidates should be encouraged to put more attention and efforts to their studies above all frivolities;
  5. only qualified History teachers should be allowed to teach the subject in schools.
