Question 3:    

Identify any five disadvantages of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

 

OBSERVATIONS

 

To most of the candidates, this question was excellent and most popular. This demanded them to identify the negative effects of the trans-Atlantic slave trade especially on the people of Nigeria. The candidates performed outstandingly and were rewarded appropriately. The brilliance of the candidates was demonstrated in the accuracy of the answers supplied to this question. Generally, the negative effects of the trade on Nigeria were listed as follow:

    • It led to the depopulation of Nigeria. There was huge drain of the  most virile and young people who were carted away by the trade;
    • it led to the decline in agriculture;
    • it led to the decline in the production of local crafts;
    • it increased state of insecurity as a result of slave raids;
    • it intensified inter-ethnic and civil wars in some communities e.g. Yorubaland.
