Question 7:

What five benefits did Nigeria derive from the amalgamation of 1914?

OBSERVATIONS

This question was fairly popular and most candidates who attempted it performed averagely well. It required the candidates to identify the advantages of the amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorates of Nigeria in 1914 for the people. However, a very few of the candidates listed the points correctly but did explain them well. This therefore prevented them from scoring good marks. The following points needed to be explained in detail in order to score good marks.

    1. The amalgamation completed the political unification of the country;
    2.   it paved the way for Nigeria to be built as a modern nation;
    3.   it provided for central administration;
    4.   it made Nigeria a geographical entity on existing unity;
    5.   trade and commerce improved.  For example, the North was provide  with commercial outlet to the sea while the South was able to obtain   agricultural products of the North.
