This was one of the most popular questions in this paper and most candidates who attempted it performed excellently. The question demanded them to identify the role played by Gowon administration in the development of Nigeria. The performance of the candidates in this question was highly impressive and compelled one to think that their brilliance was born out of the fact that the question was part of contemporary Nigerian history which they were familiar with. Nevertheless, the points listed by the good candidates included but not limited to the following:

1.    The administration created twelve states to allay the fear of domination by

          minority groups in Nigeria;

2.    the administration saved Nigeria from disintegration during the civil war;

3.    it embarked on large scale rehabilitation and reconstruction programmes

                            after the civil war;

4.    it reorganized the Nigerian armed forces by enlarging the army and equipping

          them with modern weapons;

5.    it launched Universal Primary Education with the aim of extending literacy

          to the whole country.
