A good number of candidates attempted this question. Their responses showed candidates’ lack of knowledge of “social consciousness” and how it influences the characters in the play.

The following points were expected from the candidates:

• Mrs Hardcastle’s interest in wealth, status and appearance.
• Mr Hardcastle’s boastful nature of his home and imaginary battle exploits.
• Young Marlow and Hastings’ behaviour on their visit.
• Tony’s rejection of wealth, attempted marriage and even education.
