Question 8

OLIVER GOLDSMITH: She Stoops to Conquer

To what extent do you consider the Hardcastles a happy family?

Observation

A good number of candidates attempted this question. Candidates only did mere narration of how happy the family was and did not seem to notice that they were an unhappy family.

The required answers should include:

  • • The Hardcastles’ epitomising the theme of permissive and indulgent middle-class family in the 18th century England.
  • • Membership of the Hardcastle family.
  • • The Hardcastles as an unhappy family.
  • • Their children are generally not a happy lot.
  • • Instances that create unhappiness in the family.

Candidates’ performance in this question was poor.
