This question was attempted by many candidates and the candidates’ performance was fair.
In part (a)(ii) candidates could not mention the rules that must be observed during a relay race in athletics.  In part (b)(ii) candidates could not state rules that are common to all throwing events in athletics.

The expected answers were as follows:

(a) (ii)  Rules that must be observed during a relay race in athletics

1. Race must be completed with the baton in the hand of the last leg runner
2. At the start of a race, the baton must not touch the ground beyond the scratch line/The athletes should not touch the scratch line or beyond it
3. Baton must not be thrown
4. Baton must be handed over from one person to another
5. Athlete that dropped the baton must pick it up to continue the race
6. Baton must be exchanged within the take over – zone
7. A runner runs only one distance/leg of the race.

                                                                                         
(b)(ii)   Rules common to all throwing events in athletics

1. Athletes must leave throwing area from the rear half
2. Throw must commence from a stationary position
3. Athletes must not leave the throwing circle before the missile lands
4. Athletes must not step over the circle/scratch line/metal rim/beyond the stop board during throw
5. Each athlete is credited with the best of his/her throws
6. Missile must land within the sector for a throw to be valid.
