(a)       (i)         What is a rhythmic activity?                                                               [2 marks]
           (ii)        Explain the term somersault as used in gymnastics.                           [2 marks]

(b)        State three faults associated with each of the following gymnastic activities:                      (i)         head stand;                                                                                   
(ii)        cartwheel.                                                                                            [6 marks]

(c)        State five safety precautions when performing gymnastic activities.             [5 marks]

(d)       (i)         State the first phase in the execution of vaults in gymnastics.           [ 1mark ]
            (ii)       Name four vaulting activities in gymnastics.                                      [4 marks]

Observation

Few candidates attempted this question and  their performance was good except in part (a)(ii) where candidates could not explain the term somersault correctly as used in gymnastics and in part (b)  where candidates confused the faults associated with cartwheel with those of headstand and those of headstand for cartwheel.  Also in part d(ii) candidates could not list vaulting activities in gymnastics.           

The expected answers were as follows:
(a)(ii)   Somersault
            -      A complete turn over from feet to feet;
            -      done from a standing or running start.
(b)       Faults associated with
    (i)    Headstand
            -    Forehead not placed on the ground/floor/mat
            -    Head and hands not forming a triangle
            -    Back not arched
   -    Legs not fully stretched over the head
   -    Toes not pointed.

    (ii)   Cartwheel
-    Legs not fully straightened throughout the movement/knees bent
-    Body arched
-    Toes not pointed
            -    The 4 – point landing not properly executed.

(d)(ii)    Vaulting activities in gymnastics

  1. Through vault
  2. Thief vault
  3. Astride vault
  4. Short arm overswing
  5. Horizontal astride vault
  6. Vertical astride vault
  7. Long arm over swing
