(a)(i)    Draw a volley ball court and label the lines.                                                    [6 marks]

(b)        State two functions of each of the following officials in volleyball game.              
            (i)   first referee;
            (ii)  scorer;
            (iii) line judges.                                                                                                  [6 marks]
(c)        State six ways in which football game and hockey game are similar.       [6 marks]

(d)       State the instances when a held ball is declared in a basketball game.      [2 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and the candidates’ performance was fairly good. In part (a) candidates could not label the attack line in volleyball diagram correctly.  In part (b) many candidates could not state the functions of volleyball officials.  In part (d) candidates could not state instance when a held ball is declared in basketball game.

The expected answers were as follow:

(a)  Diagram of a volley ball court

  1. Functions of volleyball officials

(i) First referee
-     He controls the game
-     Inspects playing area/balls/equipment
-     Performs the toss with team captains
-     Issues warnings
-     Sanctions misconducts/delays
-     Signs the score sheets  

     (ii)   Scorer:

  1. Registers the team/line up
  2. Records the points scored
  3. Controls the service order of each team
  4. Records time-out/players substitution
  5. Announces end of set
  6. Notifies the referee of the request for interruption that is out of order
  7. Records any sanctions
  8. Signs the score sheets

                                                                                                          
  (iii)     Line judges:

  1. Signals ‘in’ and ‘out’ of ball
  2. Signals foot faults of serve
  3. Signals when the ball touches the antenna/ball crosses the net outside crossing space
  4. Signals if any player steps outside the playing court during serving.

                                   
(d)       The instance when a held ball is declared in a basketball game

  1. When two or more opposing players get their hands firmly on the ball (and none can gain possession without undue roughness).
  2. When one closely guarded player is withholding the ball from play and is making no apparent effort to put the ball in play within 5 seconds.
