Observation

The question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.  In part (a) candidates could not state correctly instances when a jump is considered invalid in triple jump event in athletics.  In part (b) candidates could state correctly rules guiding 100 m race in athletics.  In part (c) candidates could not state duties of a track referee during athletic meet, they thought a track referee is the same as a football referee.  In part (d) (i), candidates could not state difference between a track and a lane or a line.  In part (d) (ii) candidates could not give reasons why 400m race is a sprint race.

The expected answers were as follows:

(a)        Instances when a jump is considered invalid in triple jump event in athletics
A jump is invalid when the athlete:
-           walks back through the pit after landing;
-           falls outside the pit nearer the take-off board than where he landed;
-           carries weights/explained;
-           somersaults while in flight;
-           takes off on both feet;

  • takes off around the side take-off board;
  • lands outside the landing area/pit.
  •    Rules guiding 100m race in athletics.

-           the crouch start is used/bullet/medium/elongated
-           all runners must use starting block
-           all runners are allocated specific lanes
-           all runners maintain their lanes throughout the race
-           the race is started on a straight starting/scratch line
-           a runner is disqualified after second false starts
-           all runners must complete the full distance to be placed

  • Duties of a track referee during an athletic & meet
  • assigns duties to other track officials
  • ratifies records set on track events
  • settles all disputes/disagreement/complaints
  • presides over all track events
  • can order re-run of a race
  • checks and countersigns all results of track events
  • has power to disallow/disqualify/send out any track  athlete
  • rules on any protest.

 

  (d)(i)  Track events run on a straight line
            -           100m race
            -           100m high hurdles
            -           110 high hurdles

  • Reasons why 400m race is regarded as sprint
  • It covers relatively short distance
  • Run at full speed from beginning to the end
