(b)        Explain the following terms as used in the game of hockey:
            (i)         scoop;

(iii)       push;

(c)        List five protective materials worn by the goalkeeper in a hockey game.      [5 marks]
(d)       (i)         Mention two instances when a free throw is awarded in a
basketball game.[2 marks]
(ii)  Explain jump ball in a basketball game.[3 marks]

Observation

In part (c) candidates could list protective materials worn by the goalkeeper in a hockey game.  In part (d)(i) candidates could not mention instances when a free throw is awarded in a basket ball game.  In part (d) (ii) candidates could not explain jump ball in a basketball game.
The expected answers were as follows:         
           
(a)(i)    Personal foul
            -  Personal foul is a foul by a player which involves contact with an opponent.
            -  through contact.
           
(b)      Explain the following terms as used in the game of hockey:
(i)         Scoop:
-  Stroke that involves placing the blade of the stick under the ball
-  to lift the ball in a shoveling manner.                                                                       

      • Flick:

-  This is a stroke which involves twisting of the wrist
-  to give spin to the ball.
                                                                       

  • Push:

-  A stroke which involves placing the face of the stick close to the ball
-  to move the ball on the ground.      
                                               
(iv).      Hit:
-  It is a stroke which involves striking the ball with stick
-  to move the ball forcefully.
(b)        Protective Materials worn by goalkeeper in a hockey game

  • Paddle short
  • leg guards
  • kickers
  • knee-caps
  • the boots
  • throat protector
  • helmet
  • gloves
  • chest pad
  • shoulder pad

  (c)(i)  Instances when free throw is awarded in Basketball
            -           Fouling a player when attempting a shot at the basket
-           When a personal foul is committed after four collective team fouls
in a - period/bonus rule
-           When technical foul is committed by opponent’s team.

     (ii)   Jump Ball in Basketball

  • A jump ball takes place when an official/named tosses the ball
  • between two opposing players
  • in any circle on the court.
