    The diagram below illustrates an equipment in athletics.  Study it and use it to answer questions 1(a)(i), (ii) and (iii).
                           

    1. (a)  (i)         Name the equipment.                                                  [1 mark]

    (ii)        Mention three events in athletics for which

    (iii)       State the two methods of take-over for
                which the equipment could be used for
                during an athletic meet.                                              [2 marks]

                    (b)    Name seven events for which the starting block is
                            used in athletics.                                                                     [7 marks]

                    (c)    List three implements used in field events in
                            athletics.                                                                                  [3 marks]

                   (d)    State four techniques in hurdle race.                                      [4 marks]

                   (e)     State five instances in which javelin throw is valid.               [5 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair.  In part (a)(i) few candidates correctly named the equipment illustrated in the diagram, in (a)(ii) many candidates could not mention events in athletics for      which the equipment illustrated could be used for in (a)(iii) candidates could not   correctly state the methods of take-over for which the equipment could be used             for during an athletic meet.  In part (b) candidates correctly named events for        which starting block is used in athletics.  In part (c) candidates correctly listed      implements used in field events in athletics.  In part (d) candidates could not correctly state techniques in hurdle race.  In part (e) candidates correctly stated            instances in which javelin throw is valid.

            However, the expected answers are as follows:

         (d)     Techniques in Hurdle Race

      -   5 steps should be taken before clearing the first flight.  Three steps are
      taken to clear the rest of the flights: 5 – 3 stride key.
 
                  -  For beginners, 8 steps are taken before clearing the first flight and - 4 steps to
     clear the second and rest to finish: 8 – 4 stride key.

        (e)      Instances in which Javelin Throw is Valid During Athletic Meet

                  -     the missile must land with the tip first for a good throw
                  -     the missile must not touch the ground before it is released
                  -     athlete must not step on the curved line during and after throw
                  -     the throw must be made within the throwing area
                  -     the athlete must remain within the runway and behind the scratch line until the
            missile has landed
                  -     athlete must leave through the back from behind the scratch line
                  -     athlete must stay within the runway sidelines
                  -     athlete must not turn his back towards the throwing sector before throwing the
                        javelin.   
                  -     the javelin must land within the 29o sector
                  -     the javelin must not be slung/hurled.
